Student Summer Projects

چکیده
at Spelman College, worked with Pankaj Agarwal and Yusu Wang, who just completed her PhD, at Duke. Hillary’s summer project was about analyzing the performance of the algorithm developed at Duke to generate features on a molecular surface. The features are then used to predict good configurations for protein docking. For efficiency reasons, we would like to use as few features as possible. The current feature-generation algorithm outputs four different types of features and contains several parameters that affect the output. Hiliary provided some initial studies to understand the influence of various parameters and the relative significance of different types of features. In particular, her work suggests that the algorithm produces good features even with a rather coarse surface representation, and that one particular type of feature seldom gives rise to important docking configurations. Both results help reduce the number of features that are used for the docking algorithm. NEWS BioGeometry July 2004

Bioengineering and Bioinformatics Summer Institutes: meeting modern challenges in undergraduate summer research.
Summer undergraduate research programs in science and engineering facilitate research progress for faculty and provide a close-ended research experience for students, which can prepare them for careers in industry, medicine, and academia. However, ensuring these outcomes is a challenge when the students arrive ill-prepared for substantive research or if projects are ill-defined or impractical f...
متن کاملSimulating The Interactions And Migration Of Multicellular Tissues And Synthetic Image Generation
This summer I worked with Dr. Leah Edelstein-Keshet, MSc student Dhananjay Bhaskar, and PhD student Cole Zmurchok on two major projects: simulating GTPase dynamics in cells, and generating synthetic images of cells based on real microscopy cell images. Results from both projects will be submitted for publication in the near future. In this report I will give a brief overview of both projects, d...
متن کاملeld research with undergraduate students: Three models for experiential learning projects investigating active tectonics of the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica
International fi eld experiences offer exceptional opportunities for effective student learning in the geosciences. Over the 10 yr period between 1998 and 2008, more than 40 undergraduate students from 14 institutions participated in fi eld research investigating active tectonics on the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica. Three different project models were used: (1) a month-long summer research proj...
متن کاملA summer program designed to educate college students for careers in bioinformatics.
A summer program was created for undergraduates and graduate students that teaches bioinformatics concepts, offers skills in professional development, and provides research opportunities in academic and industrial institutions. We estimate that 34 of 38 graduates (89%) are in a career trajectory that will use bioinformatics. Evidence from open-ended research mentor and student survey responses,...
متن کاملOn Summer Schools, Building Student Teams and Linking Undergraduate Education to Research
We report on summer student programmes and activities we have run, or contributed towards, for undergraduate students at Universities in the UK; in the USA; in Australia and in New Zealand over the last 16 years. We discuss the aims and objectives of such activities based around bootstrapping research projects; introducing undergraduates to the research process; and seeding new outreach and col...
متن کاملSo you want to be a Summer Student?
Around the world, studentships facilitate undergraduate medical students to experience research in a variety of disciplines. Many laboratories are willing to host medical students and there are funding bodies in the UK which provide financial support for student projects. At Queen’s University Belfast, funded places for medical students are available on 8-week summer studentship programmes in t...
